Board of Trustees News

Update from the Board of Trustees:
5 August 2010
The new board has now had two meetings ince the elections and these have focused on bringing newer trustees up to speed on current projects and issues the school is working through.  The previous BOT has done a great job and we aim to continue on the good work that they have done.

The new trustees have done a lot of reading and participating in webinars to get up to speed on understanding the role of trustee, which means understanding the nature of governance (trustees) versus management (principal).

The major focus for the school teachers and management has been the introduction of the National Standards and reporting requirements.  This has been successfully achieved with a huge amount oif work put in by the teachers.

If you have any questions or issues to raise, please feel free to talk to John or one of the trustees: Campbell Berry-Kilgour, Raewyn Laurenson, Karen Lee, Tash McIntosh, Merryl Newton, Leanne Pressman, or myself.

Kind Regards
Glynne Suckling

The current Board held its final meeting on 21 April, marking the end of three years together. As you might know, Board elections are being held on 7 May. Over pizza and a few drinks we looked back on some of the highlights of the last three years: the appointment of a new Principal, an ERO visit, the introduction of a compulsory uniform…I could go on. As our last ERO report demonstrated, our kids are getting an excellent education at Henley. That’s the most important outcome of all. The future looks bright for Henley as we move into a new phase of exciting new property developments. Some of the current Board members are standing down at these elections after many years of service. I’d like to thank Craig Dennis, Chris Stringer and Fiona McConnochie for all they have done. My thanks also to the parent community and to the Henley management and staff for such great support. A new Board will take office after elections in May. I wish them and the Principal, John Armstrong, all the very best.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES STATEMENT REGARDING THE NATIONAL STANDARDS

Henley already has in place effective student assessment and reporting procedures which allow parents to understand their children’s achievement.
This puts Henley in a strong position to easily implement the new national standards for the benefit of children’s learning at our school.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTIONS COMING UP

I’d encourage parents and caregivers to consider putting their names forward for the Board of Trustees elections which take place on 11 May. I’ll be stepping down from the Board in May, as will a couple of other current Board members. Some of the Board team plan to stand again, which is tremendous as that helps provide continuity. Being on the Board is a great way for parents to contribute to Henley. You’ll have an opportunity to be involved in the "big picture" of the school. Training for new Trustees is provided so you don't need to be an "expert". You'll be able to attend the school trustees national conference if you want to go – it's a great way to get to meet other parent Trustees from around NZ. What’s the time commitment? Two meetings per term and the occasional project meeting in between.

Nominations for elections close 23 April. If you’d like further information go to www.trustee-election.co.nz or call me at home on 541-0361.

Our next Board meeting is on Wednesday 3 March, 7.00pm in the school staff room - come along if you'd like.

Roger Ball Chairperson
Board of Trustees
