About Henley School, Richmond, Tasman

Henley School is a large co–educational primary school with a roll range of 500 to 600.

Henley School is currently a ‘zoned school’. In order to prevent overcrowding and to allow local children to attend their local school, a ‘home zone’ exists. Full details of the zone are available from our Office and also through the following website www.schoolzones.co.nz

Our grounds are spacious with shade areas created by trees and a number of hard courts, as well as open grass areas. We also have an all weather Astroturf court area. We have three modern playgrounds which are popular with the community during the weekends and holidays. We are fortunate to have a well maintained school swimming pool which is made available to our school community to use during the summer break. We also have a large hall/gymnasium facility on our site.

About

Henley School

Our History

Henley School was opened by Mr Tennant, the then Minister of Education, on 28 November 1962. The roll at the time was 192 and there were six classrooms. Mr W S Burnside (1962 - 67) was the first Principal and, through his leadership, the school built a fine reputation in the district.

The second Principal, Mr N M Brownlie, continued this fine work and during his time (1968 - 83) was largely responsible for the many ground improvements. His successor, Mr N Moore, retired from the position in December 1990. Mr Chris Ryan was principal from 1991 until his retirement in 2008 with the current principal Mr John Armstrong taking up the role at the beginning of 2009.

Henley School is named after a public vote, from names suggested through a “name the school” competition. The name Henley which was selected, proved most appropriate as the contributing area was first named “Henley” by one of the early settlers who came from Henley on Thames, England.

There was a steady growth in the population and the school roll peaked at 521 in December 1979. Then the roll, in line with the national trend, declined, as seen by the 1986 December roll of 398. Since then many new housing areas have been developed near Henley, and the roll is now consistently around the 500-600 mark.

Our Learning Centre and Administration Block have recently been rebuilt. The Learning Centre includes a spacious Library along with multipurpose flexible spaces and a central Resource Room. We have also recently installed an all weather surfaced court area that is fantastic for Physical Education and outdoor learning.
